Menexenus
"Menexenus" by Plato is a Socratic dialogue traditionally included in the seventh tetralogy. The work consists mainly of a funeral oration that Socrates claims to have learned from Aspasia, a prominent female Athenian philosopher. The speech praises Athens and recounts its military victories while parodying the style of traditional funeral oratory. Unique among Platonic dialogues, the actual conversation serves primarily as exposition for the lengthy oration itself.

Reading guidance
Level C1Language difficulty is an AI estimate based on sampled text.
Reader and content guidance is an AI estimate based on the title, author, source summary, contents and selected excerpts. Unseen portions have not been assessed.
Recommended age: 14+ (AI estimate)
Content is suitable from about 14, but conceptual maturity limits enjoyment: supported reading at 14+ with historical/rhetorical context, independent appreciation likely older due to abstract argument about virtue, death and Athens. Based on named-book metadata and selected excerpts; unseen text was not assessed. This is guidance, not an official age rating; individual reading ability varies.
